A land of festivals and history
In addition to the many cultural and historical sites, Charente-Maritime is ideal for an active and sporting holiday. Here you won't find glitter or rhinestones but authentic, natural and preserved landscapes.
You can make the ocean your own, learn a few words of Charentais patois like "funny" (or children) and relax on one of the many beaches of the islands or the mainland. Fishing boats rub shoulders with sailboats. And if in the north there are more kite-surfers and windsurfers, the surfers take over the waves of the south.

La Rochelle
Discover its historic harbour, have a coffee on the terrace, stroll under the arcades and visit the aquarium or one of the famous towers. What would a visit to Charente-Maritime be without stopping in La Rochelle?
Ile de Ré/ Re Island
Its fame is well established and time stands still on this pearl of the Atlantic. The island remains one of the region's biggest attractions and is well worth a visit. By bike, on foot or by car, it is up to you to choose how to discover it. There are shuttle buses that make it easy for you to cross the bridge on foot or by bike (go to the car park at the lookout at the foot of the bridge).
Rochefort s/ Mer
Thanks to the Hermione, a replica of Lafayette's boat, Rochefort has regained its reputation and is attracting more and more tourists. In addition to the visit of this famous boat, we particularly recommend the Espace de la Mer and a stroll along the banks of the Charente River, passing by the royal shoemaker's workshop.
Fouras, going to "Aix Island (Ile d'Aix)"
Known to the most astute, the island of Aix is above all a haven of peace that can be discovered on foot or by bike. You can walk around it in 1 to 2 hours...
Fouras deserves also that you take a look at it!

Ile d'Oléron/ Oléron Island
Wild and luminous, the island of Oleron is the land of oyster farmers and fishermen. Surfing is possible on certain beaches and many activities are proposed for tourists.
Royan and the "wild coast"
Magnificent beaches and a steep coastline are located next to the forest of La Coubre. Under the pines, you can enjoy magnificent bike rides and take the 30 km greenway between Ronce-Les-Bains and Saint-Palais-Sur-Mer.
Zoo La Palmyre
Magnificent zoo nested in the heart of a pine forest where you can always find shade when it is very hot. Beautiful diversity of animals and nice shows to make children's eyes shine.
Cité de l'huitre à Marennes d'Oléron/ Oyster farm in Marennes d'Oléron
If there is a speciality of the region to highlight, there are oysters. Discover in Marennes the oyster farming that shapes the landscape of this region.
Marais poitevin or "green Venice"
Otherwise known as the Green Venice, let yourself be guided by boat through these labyrinths of greenery and taste "mogettes", prefou or Angelica-based products.

Le puy du fou
The most visited theme park in France, the Puy du Fou is worth a visit. Initially a theme park focused on the Middle Ages, the Puy du Fou is diversifying and takes us on a journey through different eras. I can't wait until our children are old enough to go there to make them discover this magnificent park!

Castles/ citadels
St Jean d'Angle
Very well renovated, this fortified castle offers educational activities on the theme of the Middle Age. A nice family sightseeing, very enriching for children and teenagers.

Citadelle de Brouage
One must imagine that the sea arrived at the foot of the ramparts of this citadel, now surrounded by marshes. You are following in the footsteps of Champlain, founder of Québec City (Canada). This unusual site, located in the middle of nowhere, is a trace of the military past of the Rochefort area.
